In one week, I'll be boarding a plane destined for Kigali, Rwanda. I can't believe it's about to begin! For those of you who want to communicate with me in what will likely be the surest (though also slowest) option, or for those who might want to brighten my day with a package of goodies or even just a handwritten letter (I love getting mail), I will have a mailing address. Throughout my service, any mail can be addressed to me at the following address:
Matthew Beamer, PCV
U.S. Peace Corps
B.P. 5657
Kigali, Rwanda
At the end of my training, when I move to where I will teach, I will likely have a new address that will reach me more directly, and I'll post that when it's available, but I can always receive mail addressed to the Kigali headquarters.
As far as sending packages, they can be sent through USPS, UPS, or FedEx (as well as others probably), and I can't say which is best, though I believe that it is usually far cheaper to send it via USPS. There are some guidelines that have been suggested by the Peace Corps and other volunteers:
1. Don't send anything of great value. I probably don't need it anyway.
2. Packages sent in padded envelopes are usually taxed less frequently than those sent in boxes, so they are recommended.
3. Mark each letter or package with "Air Mail" and/or "Par Avion"
4. Be succinct on the customs form to prevent the package being raided.
There may be more tips, but I'll let you know as I find out.
I'm looking forward to all the good things that might come in the mail! And just remember that if you write me a letter I will definitely write you back!

Good luck, Matt!!! I'll be thinking of you and checking your blog for updates. And maybe I'll even send a letter or 2. :-)
